Hike

As the holiday weekend approached we were trying to decide what we could do as a family. We were looking for things that would be inexpensive but would still be enjoyable for the kids. We went up to a picnic site on Thursday night, July 2, with Tony and Jami to roast hotdogs and marshmallows. They mentioned that they were going to go hiking the next morning and wondered if we would like to join them. We decided this would be a perfect solution to our “what to do” dilemma. We met them at 7:30 at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon. We started up the mountain. The kids were excited and showed a lot of enthusiasm (mostly because they had cousins to hang out with and not just old mom and dad). We reached the Bell’s Canyon Lake in about 25 minutes. We knew there was a waterfall further up the canyon but didn’t know how much further. We decided to continue up. It was really pretty and we were amazed at how far we could see across the valley from where we were. We hiked and hiked. All of the kids were doing great. Nobody complained and even Addison did well. We came to a point where it was pretty steep and there were lots of big rocks to climb over. People would pass us and they would always say, “the falls are just around the corner”. We were wondering if that was true because we came across a lot of “corners” but we kept going. Finally, 2 hours and 8 minutes into our hike we reached the falls. They were fantastic and worth every step. Tony, Steve and Chase climbed to the top and took some great pictures. It was pretty steep so I stayed back with the other kids. We ate our snacks and started back. Steve ended up carrying Addison most of the way down because she kept tripping on rocks. Round trip it took us about 5 hours and needless to say, I am BEAT!
